This third generation of River-class patrol ship is designed for counter-piracy, anti-smuggling, fishery protection, border patrol, counter terrorism and maritime defence duties.

In October 2015, the first steel was cut on this new ship, and in March 2018 she was formally named HMS Trent at the Glasgow shipyard where she was built.
