Biography

846 Naval Air Squadron's role

846 Naval Air Squadron is primarily an amphibious assault squadron, delivering Royal Marines from ship to shore using the fearsome new AugustaWestland Merlin Mk3 helicopter. The squadron has provided battlefield support in a number of operational areas, including the Falkland Islands, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

846 Naval Air Squadron will be among the first units to get to grips with the Merlin Mk3’s successor: the Commando Merlin Mk4. An even faster, more powerful aircraft than its predecessor, the Mk4 will be operational by 2023.
