Wildfire Reservist takes Control

In early December, Lieutenant Commander Andrew Carey, Executive Officer at HMS Wildfire, had the honour of officiating at the 2014 International Basketball Tournament, held at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).

Andrew, who has been a Royal Naval Reservist for 16 years, travelled to Mons in Belgium with the UK military basketball team as one of two British Referees officiating at the 2014 event.

He said: “These teams, despite being made up of military personnel, play at a very high standard which is on-par with professional basketball in the UK."

The tournament, which is in its 51st year, brings together some of the best military basketball teams for a week- long competition;  the UK team is the only one to have participated at all 51 tournaments.

To be able to officiate a game of such high standard is a great experience and a highlight of my refereeing year

During the week, Andrew was appointed to referee with officials from the other nations represented and took control of some close and competitive games in the initial pool stages, which included teams from the UK, USA, Lithuania, among others, and for the first time, Kuwait.

When the appointments to the play-off finals were announced, Andrew was honoured to be given two games, including the championship final of USA against Lithuania. In a competitive and nail-biting final, the USA ended up the SHAPE 2014 winners with an 89 – 82 victory against Lithuania.

Andrew added: “To be given the championship final to referee is the ultimate honour and recognition of my refereeing in the pool games. To be able to officiate a game of such high standard is a great experience and a highlight of my refereeing year."
